As work begins on a transformative four-year project to rediscover, restore, and revitalise Alnwick Castle’s historic kitchens, they will open to the public for the very first time in 2025.
This exciting project offers a unique opportunity to uncover and share a significant part of the castle’s history, bringing these historic spaces to life.
Over the years, the kitchens have served many purposes. During World War II, they housed evacuees as part of Newcastle Church High School’s evacuation efforts. Later, they became a hub for teacher training under Northumberland County Council, and from the 1970s, they were used by St. Cloud State University. Despite their history, the kitchens have never been accessible to the public—until now.
Unveiling the Past
Explore architect Anthony Salvin’s expertly designed Great Kitchen and four grand larder rooms.
Exciting highlights so far include the incredible rediscovery of Victorian ovens, hidden behind a wall for decades, and the removal of modern tiles to unveil the original stone floor beneath!
As restoration continues, additional spaces will open in 2026 and 2027, offering further insights into the history and function of these remarkable areas.
A Journey Through Time
Be transported back to the 19th century and learn about the cutting-edge steam and hydraulic technology that made Alnwick Castle’s kitchens a marvel of Victorian innovation.
With the help of experts and historians, the project will also look into the lives of the people who worked there and the culinary creations they made in upcoming phases of our restoration project.
